is there still support for TProfGrid control ?
Nicholas,

questions as old as 1 month still lay unanswered...

This is no comfortable situation for a coder that uses your component in strategic applications...

Do you plan to support the control also in the future ?

Hi Peppe,

Maybe you should place a message in profgrid.htmledit.support as it seems that Nicholas is answering in that newsgroup.

Here, in this one, there is hardly any response... Indeed worrying, because our own apps depend on this component.

Hi Fons,

>Maybe you should place a message in profgrid.htmledit.support as it seems that Nicholas is answering in that newsgroup.

last answered message is
6/9/2008

>Indeed worrying

well, having the component source code does helps.

I am afraid that Nicholas is not having the earnings the component deserves and that his support won't last for long.

What a pity.

TProfGrid is the best component I put my hands on since the times of Delphi 1.

Re: is there still support for TProfGrid control ?
Hi All,

Why is everyone so worried? Nicolas has always provided great support and I don't think that will change. Maybe he is having a well deserved holiday or a break somewhere. Or maybe he has other commitments currently. I honestly do not know the situation, but maybe this component is a part time project and he has his main work to concentrate on. I know that happens to me sometimes. As much as I enjoy making money from my hobbies and side projects, it is my main job that pays the mortgage and the bills and to fill the car with petrol!

I'm sure he will reply to all you posts soon. In the meantime, a lot of us have used Profgrid for a long time and I'm sure we can help each other out if worse comes to worse. In the past, I have not answered other peoples queries as I've not wanted to encroach onto Nicholas support pages and feel like I was interfering.

But I'm sure under the circumstances if we can help Nicholas out by helping each other that would be acceptable. But at the end of the day, none of us know the product inside out like he does.

ps..... and this is just a personal opinion. If, as query, Nicholas doesn't make enough money from the component then I suggest that he introduces some kind of (cheap!) annual support. I think he has actually been very generous in the past by offering life time support. This hardly ever happens in the software business. I, for one, wouldn't object to paying an annual 'maintenance' fee.

Just a thought......

Hi Trevor,

Why is everyone so worried? Nicolas has always provided great support and I
don't think that will change.

Well, Rob van Tour reported an rounding error on 8 December 2007, which Nicholas could confirm and he stated that it will be fixed in the next maintenance release - which will be version 3.4.4.9.

On 4 May 2008 (which is 6 months after reporting the error) Rob van Tour enquired when this version will be released. The reply was soon.

On 1 June 2008 I asked when this version will be released. Another month has gone by. So, it is now 7 months after reporting the confirmed error. And in these 7 months not even a very minor update was released. I would say that this is worrying... Maybe you don't agree.

Hi Peppe,

well, having the component source code does helps.

I find it very difficult to change some one else's code.

I am afraid that Nicholas is not having the earnings the component deserves
and that his support won't last for long.

About a month ago I mentionned ProfGrid in the non-technical Delphi newsgroup. It is however hardly mentionned by others. I guess it is quite unknown to many people.

What a pity.

Indeed.

TProfGrid is the best component I put my hands on since the times of Delphi 1.

I have struggled with the DevExpress grid and find ProfGrid very easy to use and it works as I expect it to work. It is really a great component.

Trevor,

I would love to pay for an annual support to make the water flow.

However the no of registered users of TProfGrid is not high enough to sum up a cheap annual support into a significant sum.

Maybe a $5,000 annual support would ... :)

Let's wait and see what Nicholas decides.

Probably Nicholas is a much better coder than a marketer :)

Fons,

>I find it very difficult to change some one else's code.

this goes without saying, but it is still better than nothing.

Right today a coder wrote me:

"I forgot to say I had to add one line of code to ProfGrid or else it crashes when I drag the job in the planning grid for some reason (line 15854)"

>About a month ago I mentionned ProfGrid in the non-technical Delphi newsgroup. It is however hardly mentionned by others. I guess it is quite unknown to many people.

right.

Nicholas should sell TProfGrid to some bigger software company that knows how to market its products (ComponentAce ?) or find some niche market (Morfik ?)

There is a brave new world out there in the web...but the rule is: you got to have some marketing skills to sell and stay in business.

I think there a large number of people who may have more need/interest in a Data-Aware grid with e.g. design time columns for RAD db appl development. I agree Profgrid is a really easy to use, powerful component, but I specifically chose it because I needed a spreadsheet type component.

I'm sure profgrid would become more well known if it was also db-aware. However, maybe the internal design makes it difficult to achieve a grid that is both spreadsheet as well as data-aware.

perhaps better to say /would have been/. I'm not requesting or suggesting such a feature. I doubt it would be a good move to work on such a feature at this point in time.

Hi Rael,

I'm sure profgrid would become more well known if it was also db-aware.

Not for me. I specifically like ProfGrid as it is not DB-aware. However, if DB-aware functionality will be added, there will be two components, so everyone can use the one he likes.

The spreadsheet capabilities are indeed also very nice.

But the best part is that it is easy to use, but yet quite powerfull.

Re: is there still support for TProfGrid control ?
Hi All,

I also like ProfGrid as it is.
I created a module around TProfgrid class wich makes it as db-aware as I need. It is easy to create such a module, you should try.
Unfortunately mine is too complex to make it public.
